US President urged not to repeat the mistakes of the past. He was given an open letter, under which more than a thousand economists had signed, including Nobel laureates. The authors of the message refreshed Trump's memory, setting out the idea of ??what the protective policy led to. The protectionist course resulted in the Great Depression - the global economic crisis of the 1930s. Then about the same number of economists called on Congress not to adopt the Smoot-Hawley protectionist law on customs tariffs. But the US government did not meet petitioners. Americans paid for the initiative, it follows from the letter. Its compilers have drawn a parallel with the current situation in the US. They stressed that one of the achievements of the global economic system was the postwar decline in trade barriers. However, the measures that the modern leader uses will "raise the cost of living and negatively affect the majority of American cities".

The text stipulates that increased import duties will be erroneous, since they will benefit a small percentage of Americans. As a result, such decisions will not become "a good soil for world stability", but, on the contrary, create favorable conditions for the breaking of trade ties. At the beginning of the year, the United States blamed the construction of actions for the global trade war. The reason is an increase in import duties for panels for solar cells, washing machines, steel and aluminum. China responded to the measures, defended its own trade interests and Europe.
