Kiev has no chance to "return" under the jurisdiction of Ukraine Crimea. So says the former EU ambassador to Russia Michael Emerson. He stated this in an interview with Apostrophe on Monday, March 26. In his opinion, Brussels and Washington are more concerned about what is happening in the Donbass than the status of the peninsula.
"The annexation of the Crimea, unfortunately, is a fact. And since the EU and the US in the operational plan are now very concerned about what to do with Lugansk and Donetsk, with the Crimea, it seems, everything is different. Simply put, the vision is: unfortunately, there is no more Crimea, the point, "- said the Briton. He stressed that Kiev has no way to "return" the peninsula, except for the "big war", which will no longer be. At the same time, the expert believes, the sanctions against Russia will continue and "probably will always be," but it is unlikely that the Ukrainian authorities will help the claims to the Crimea.
Regarding the situation in the Donbass Basin, Emerson suggested that it will remain at a deadlock for many years, and probably will remain frozen in the example of Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh or Transnistria. And the last option he called best for Ukraine. Recall Crimea joined the Russian Federation after a referendum held there in March 2014, in which 96.77% of the voters of the republic and 95.6% of Sevastopol residents spoke in favor of reunification with Russia.
