Russia recognized the International Telecommunication Union as the most important structure within the UN that deals with global regulation of communication issues. This was announced on Monday, March 12, by the Minister of Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation Nikolai Nikiforov during the meeting with the Head of the Republic Sergey Aksenov. According to the minister, this happened in 2017. "In the numbering plans, in official documents, the Crimea and Sevastopol noted as a full-fledged territory in the connected part of the Russian Federation. In this sense, some talk on the topic of a connected infrastructure affiliation is completely gone, "Nikiforov quoted Kryminform. It is noted that at the moment the peninsula is connected to the mainland part of Russia by submarine cables, the Crimeans have Russian telephone numbering, Internet traffic is coming to the Crimea from the Russian Federation. "There are no differences whatsoever. And this is confirmed by documents even at the level of the UN organization. This is a very important decision, and it gives grounds for continuing the systematic development of communications in the Crimea, "the minister said.. Also, the Office will consider the possibility of virtual transfer of Crimean IP-addresses to another region, to circumvent the sanctions imposed on the peninsula. Despite the fact that all the Internet Republic receives from Russia, the Crimean IP-addresses are defined all over the world as the territory of Ukraine and they are also subject to the sanctions of the West.
According to the agency, two fiber-optic communication lines (FOCL) are stretched from the mainland of the Russian Federation to the peninsula with a total capacity of 12 terabytes. The first (capacity of 8 terabytes) is laid along the bottom of the Kerch Strait and put into operation in April 2014. The second FOCL - standby - was put into operation in early July 2017 with a capacity of 4 terabits. The Ukrainian line was dismantled last summer.
On the Russian telephone code Crimea passed in May 2015.
