Macedonia is ready literally for anything, just to become a full member of the European Union, even to rename the republic itself. This was announced by the Prime Minister Zoran Zaev. Now the toponyms are the main stumbling block between Skopje and Athens. The Greeks believe that Macedonia illegally appropriated the name of one of the historical provinces in northern Greece. In this regard, Athens is blocking all negotiations on Macedonia's accession to the European Union. The dispute between neighbors lasts for several decades, literally from the moment of independence of the Republic of Macedonia. While it was part of Yugoslavia, the Greeks did not object much. But in 1991. everything has changed. In Athens, they were so indignant at the "usurpation" of the name by a sovereign republic that they imposed a trade embargo against the neighbors and then prevented their entry into NATO. It seems, now, the conflict has moved from a dead center. "For the negotiations to reach success, we are ready for a geographical clarification in the title," Zaev said, speaking in Skopje. "Today's decision confirms our step on the road to building friendship and trust with Greece," he quoted Reuters as saying.. The prime minister did not say how the authorities of Macedonia want to name the republic, but said that the airport, which now bears the name of Alexander the Great, will be renamed to "Skopje International Airport", and the largest motorway named after "the same emperor" will be called "Friendship". Previously, Macedonia was renamed for the Republic of New Macedonia, the Republic of Northern Macedonia, the Republic of Upper Macedonia, the Republic of Vardar Macedonia and the Republic of Macedonia (Skopje). Last Sunday, residents of northern Greece staged a demonstration in which they protested any name of the neighboring state, if it includes the word "Macedonia".
