The US Congress, by a majority of its members (364 votes), rejected the Democrat-proposed Al Green resolution on impeachment to US President Donald Trump. Moreover, this decision was supported not only by Republicans, but also by a majority of democrats - 126 out of 194 party representatives voted "against". As the leader of the democratic minority in the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and her deputy Steny Hoyer said, "now is not the time to consider articles of impeachment," writes the Independent. They called on Congress to focus on a huge number of urgent, overdue issues, priority for the American people.
"The Democrats are firmly focused on taking real effective steps to improve the lives of hardworking Americans and repelling Republicans' brutal attacks on the middle class," reads their joint statement. Thus, the leaders of the Democrats opposed the initiative of their fellow party member, the representative of Texas Al Green, who accused Mr. Trump of inciting hatred and hostility "on the basis of race, national origin, religion, gender or sexual orientation". Speaking in the House of Representatives Green said that the president not only "sowed discord among people in the United States," but also gained "contempt, mockery, disgrace and disrepute" for his administration. In his address to his colleagues, the congressman noted that "the question is not that we have a president - a fanatic, the question is that we will do this". The answer he sees is one - impeachment. At the same time, Al Greene was not at all sure that he would be able to enlist the support of his initiative in the Congress controlled by the Republicans. Impeachment requires a majority of votes in the House of Representatives and a two-thirds vote in the Senate, which is also controlled by Trump party members.
A representative of the White House, Raj Shah, called a vote on the issue of impeachment to the president "a disappointing" move by "extremists in Congress". Meanwhile, the initiative of impeachment is not only Democrat Al Green.
The own campaign to abolish Donald Trump from power under the slogan "Impeachment must be declared" is led by billionaire Tom Styer. On a site specially created by him, there is a vote for the resignation of the president. "Donald Trump put us on the threshold of nuclear war, obstructs justice, took money from foreign states. We need to announce impeachment to such a dangerous president, "reads the call to vote.
"For" the removal of Trump from power during the campaign was already more than 3.3 million Americans.
Previously, the early resignation of US presidents was initiated three times, but as a result, only one president left his post - Richard Nixon (his reign 1969-1974g. ), against whom an impeachment procedure was initiated for the so-called "Watergate".
And he applied for his resignation before the hearings in Congress began.
Two other presidents, Andrew Johnson (1865 - 1869g. ) and Bill Clinton (1992-2000. ), as a result managed to avoid impeachment.
