NATO is trying to push through a new package of documents on cooperation with the European Union. On Tuesday, December 5, the foreign ministers of the NATO countries will meet for a two-day meeting, the main issue of which will be the future interaction with the EU. Considering that the overwhelming majority of the member countries of the North Atlantic alliance are also members of the European Union, a conflict of interests can spark serious. I must say that before Europe managed to avoid confrontation with NATO. The military bloc where the Americans run, without any controversy, gave all the questions of a strategic nature and for that they still paid membership fees. However, in recent years, the EU has become increasingly voiced in favor of greater autonomy in dealing with issues of a defensive nature. It was formed in the idea of ??the organization of the Permanent Strategic Cooperation (PESCO). It is planned that only European states will enter there and that they will decide exclusively the affairs of European security. But in fact, of course, this body will duplicate the functions of NATO in the territory of the EU, and even more - compete. In the North Atlantic alliance, the initiative was not approved and tried to pretend that it should not be taken into account when planning future affairs. For example, now on the agenda is a discussion of the issues of the advancement of NATO forces and assets in Europe. The topic is certainly very important. As everyone learned during the exercises in Eastern Europe, the technique of the overseas members of the military bloc is simply not suitable for most European countries: bridges do not withstand the weight of armored personnel carriers, tanks do not fit into road turns. This will be a real problem if tomorrow there is a war. "Our soldiers and equipment must be able to move faster," said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, announcing the agenda of the meeting. But for this, he said, "NATO needs the support of national governments and the European Union". European members of the alliance understand this, but they do not want to hurry and take on additional obligations. Since not everything is clear with PESCO, and it is necessary within the EU to decide which piece of pie they are ready to share with NATO.
Therefore, the package of new measures of cooperation between NATO and the EU has not yet been agreed upon.
"To date, negotiations on this package are still ongoing," Stoltenberg admitted on Monday, December 4. "But I hope that we will agree on expanding joint actions with the EU, including on actions in new areas," RIA Novosti quoted the Secretary General as saying.. The meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the NATO countries will be held in Brussels on December 5-6.
