The draft resolution on the Crimea submitted by Kiev contains new provisions and requirements for Russia that will help them to return the peninsula. Ukraine's permanent representative to the United Nations, Vladimir Yelchenko, argues that, according to the document, there is an armed conflict between Ukraine and Russia. He also condemns the introduction of his own laws in the Crimea by the Kremlin and claims that Moscow has no legal rights. This is reported by "Ukrinform". Yelchenko stressed that Russia is obliged to restore rights and freedom to Ukrainian citizens on the Crimean peninsula. "The document, in addition, calls on the Russian occupation authorities to ensure the educational process in Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar, and also comply with the laws of Ukraine, in particular in matters of property," he added.. In addition, Vladimir Yelchenko called the main goal of all the work done approaching the de-occupation of the Crimea. The resolution also calls for repealing the ban on the organization of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People and allowing international organizations to access the peninsula.
Crimea became part of Russia in March 2014. on the basis of a referendum. Almost 97% of the inhabitants of the peninsula voted for the republic's membership in the Russian Federation. In Sevastopol, 95.6% of citizens voted for joining Russia.
The referendum was held in response to the coup d'etat in Ukraine in February 2014. The new leadership of Nezalezhnaya does not recognize the referendum in Crimea as legitimate and considers the peninsula to be occupied by Russia.
