The United States is already taking steps aimed at showing Russia the need to respect the Open Skies Treaty. This was reported to Interfax by a representative of the State Department on Wednesday, September 27. American diplomat noted that Washington "has long been concerned" with the Russian interpretation of the agreement. "After repeated and unsuccessful attempts of diplomatic cooperation with Moscow, we decided to take some reasonable and comparable measures in response to Russia's non-compliance with its obligations," the source emphasized.. At the same time, according to the diplomat, the United States will be able to quickly cancel the measures taken as soon as Russia starts executing the Treaty to the extent that everyone is satisfied. What exactly are these measures, the State Department official did not specify. On the eve of the Wall Street Journal, referring to its own source, the United States plans to ban Russia from observing flights over Alaska and Hawaii that are being carried out by military pilots under the Open Skies Treaty of March 24, 1992. The article noted that in this way the US authorities want to respond to "the Kremlin's ban on flying over Kaliningrad". The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that they know about the US claims, but in Moscow they do not consider them to be justified.

At the same time, the American side did not notify Russia of the official response steps. In turn, the Kremlin recalled that before accusing Russia of anything, the US should also strictly follow the provisions of the Treaty.

The open skies treaty was signed in 1992. the OSCE.

Russia joined the agreement in 2001. At present, 34 parties to the Treaty have the right to circumnavigate each other's territory in order to monitor military activities.
