American senator-Republican Lindsay Graham, known for his anti-Russian position, announced the intention of the US Congress in the near future to tighten sanctions against the Russian Federation.

According to him, the relevant bill will be considered this week.

"There is an overwhelming proof that Russia is trying to destroy democracy here and abroad," Graham said on CBS News.

According to the senator, the new sanctions will demonstrate the US determination to "punish the Russians". If President Donald Trump refuses to sign the corresponding law, he will "betray democracy".

In February, at the Munich Security Conference, Graham declared that "2017 will be the year when Russia will kick an ass in Congress" and promised to soon "put Trump on the table" a bill on new sanctions that the US president will be obliged to support as a "leader of the free world" ".

Graham is also one of the initiators of the Russia Review Act, which prohibits the US president from deciding to lift anti-Russian sanctions without the approval of congressmen.
