Adopting a law that allows Ukraine to become a member of NATO is an extremely important step; Despite the difficult situation in the country, today it is a "working one", and should not become an obstacle to gaining membership in the Alliance.

This opinion was expressed to the "Observer" by the ex-Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Lieutenant-General Igor Romanenko.

He recalled that in 2008, at the Bucharest summit, Ukraine could receive an Action Plan for joining NATO and soon become a member of the Alliance, but at that time it was hampered by the position of France and Germany. "From the Russian filing, they referred to the fact that it is not known how the people of Ukraine will take this decision," said the general. In addition, there was opposition to the entry into NATO by the runaway ex-president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych.

As Romanenko is convinced, if such a decision were made then, "there could hardly have been such events that occurred with the Crimea and the Donbas".

He also recalled the seven stages of NATO enlargement, when the Alliance adopted from one to several countries simultaneously. However, in many candidate countries there was an unstable situation. In addition, "no state that has entered has met the requirements to the full".

So, "Germany joined NATO in 1955 - 2 years after the well-known events in Berlin (anti-government strike in the GDR. - Red. ), When the Soviet army suppressed the uprising. Despite the unstable state of the state, he was admitted to NATO ".

Romanenko added that the situation in Croatia and Albania was no less unstable at the time of accession. Croatia was admitted to NATO in 2009, soon after the armed conflict with Serbia.

The general also recalled that in Montenegro, which became the 29th NATO member state in May of this year, with the help of Russian and Serb forces, a coup attempt was recently carried out.

"Our current situation is a working one, and if the countries concerned so desire, the issue of membership can be resolved.

We must move forward and continue to fight, continue to make the utmost efforts of state structures and society as a whole to move towards NATO membership. This is both safer and more economical for the state. This is a struggle, and one must be strong, "stressed the general..

"This is a very powerful confrontation between Russia," he said..

As the "Observer" wrote, on June 8 the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the bill No. 6470 on amendments to the legislation regarding the resumption of the course of Ukraine for membership in NATO.
