Spy mania and defense from the far-fetched Russian aggression was necessary for the authorities of Montenegro to convince the citizens of the country that without joining NATO they will be lost. This conclusion was reached in Moscow after Podgorica accused her of interfering in internal affairs.

The inhabitants of Montenegro did not share the authorities' desire to join the North Atlantic military alliance, and now Podgorica tries to justify the necessity of such a step by all the truths and fouls, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in response to the words of Montenegrin Foreign Minister Sergeant Darmanovich.

"Information support for joining the alliance was built on spy mania and defense from a virtual enemy. All this was necessary for one simple reason: the people of Montenegro with the idea of ??membership in NATO, to say the least, did not catch fire. That is why the referendum was not held: the semi-official was afraid to show the true figures that demonstrate the will of the Montenegrins. Accordingly, it was decided to suppress this will, inventing stories about the "hand of the Kremlin", - noted Zakharova.

Earlier, the head of the Montenegrin diplomacy said that Podgorica achieved membership in NATO, despite Moscow's opposition. "Russia openly interfered in our domestic political issues, to which, of course, we looked without approval. Russia has pursued a policy of spheres of interest in the last two or three years and opposes NATO enlargement. We decided that our main goals will be determined by ourselves, and we were surprised how much Russia interfered. Of course, we defended ourselves, "Darmanovich said on RTCG, explaining that Russian intelligence openly supports the Montenegrin opposition, which opposed the country's accession to NATO.

"Of course, we can not agree that someone third decides where we should be," he said..

A month ago, the Parliament of Montenegro ratified the protocol on accession to NATO by a decision of 46 deputies out of 81. The opposition demanded to bring the issue to a referendum, but the authorities ignored it. A full member of the alliance the country will become after the approval of the document by Spain - the last of the NATO member countries. However, in the alliance summit last week Podgorica already participated.
