Negotiations between Russia and Japan over the ownership of the Kurile Islands have reached a deadlock. Moscow sees no object for the dispute, and Tokyo is disappointed in the strategy of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

It's not even trampling on the spot, it's an obvious rollback. Last year, Russian and Japanese media enthusiastically discussed the meetings of the leaders of Russia and Japan, experts discussed possible trade-offs. But a little time passed, and Abe's visit to Moscow in late April no longer aroused any interest. It was clear beforehand that the opportunities for a dialogue on the Kuriles have been exhausted, and there is no other basis for extensive cooperation between the countries.

The main thing is that the Japanese are finally convinced that the Kuril Islands will not receive their own property. In Russia they constantly repeated that belonging to this territory can not be disputed, since everything was legalized according to the norms of international law. Therefore, to discuss everything in Moscow are ready-anything-joint economic and economic activities in the Kurils, tourism, visits to the graves of ancestors-but not jurisdiction.

Moreover, as the head of the economy and policy of Japan IMEMO RAN, an expert of the Russian Council on Foreign Affairs Vitaly Shvydko in the "Newspaper. Py ", Moscow considers all these economic projects and deals with the Japanese side as purely commercial enterprises that are neither Russia's assistance, nor political steps to meet. On the contrary, the participation of Japanese companies in economic activities on Russian territory is perceived in Moscow as a manifestation of their goodwill.

For Tokyo, at the forefront of any relationship with Russia - the Kuriles. And making sure that nothing would burn out, the Japanese lost interest in projects on the same "northern lands". Strongly goes now to Prime Minister Abe. For the sake of the Kuriles, he even tried to go against the traditions of Japanese diplomacy and relied on personal relations with President Putin. But neither the public assurances of informal friendship nor the treatment by name helped. Therefore, in the country his strategy of building relations with Russia is recognized as erroneous, his political opponents gladly kiss his name, and ordinary people of the Land of the Rising Sun realized that the hopes he hopes for the sooner joining of the islands are illusive and unrealizable.
