One of the Forsyte brothers, the heroes of the famous saga John Galsworthy, complained that he does not interfere anywhere and he is told nothing. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said that his country does not interfere in the affairs of other states, reminded me of this British gentleman. It seems that Vladimir Putin has not been told for a long time, writes Vitaly Portnikov for "Crimea. Realities ".
If they told us, he would never in his life have allowed himself such an utterance. He would know for sure that his country rudely intervened in the internal affairs of Moldova, tore away part of the territory from her, handed out her passports there and still prevents the restoration of the territorial integrity of the country. He would know for sure that his country rudely intervened in the Georgian conflict, tore away part of Georgia from Georgia and recognized the independence of the occupied lands. He would have known for sure that his country had attacked Ukraine, annexed part of its territory - the Crimea, and on the other part established a regime of terror and sabotage. He would know for sure that his country intervened in the civil conflict in Syria, participated in the destruction of civilians and the persistence of the misanthropic regime.
The list of Russian interventions is long and disgusting. Over the past 26 years - and under Yeltsin, and under Putin, and under Medvedev - Russia has consistently supported dictatorial regimes that are engaged in the destruction of their fellow citizens and the suppression of civil liberties. So it was with Slobodan Milosevic in Serbia. So it was with Saddam Hussein in Iraq. So it was with Viktor Yanukovich in Ukraine. This is the case with Kim Jong-un's regime in North Korea. With Bashar Assad in Syria. With the Iranian ayatollahs. For the sake of helping its allies, Russia has turned into a very laughing stock of the UN Security Council, which from the rule of law in the world has become a toothless talker. If all this is not an intervention, then what is the intervention?.
Of course, fans of Vladimir Putin will object to me that he does not interfere alone. That the United States intervened in the former Yugoslavia, and in Afghanistan, and in Iraq, and in Syria, and in Libya. But the difference is that the United States does not deny this. None of the American presidents will say that his country does not interfere anywhere. The country has been debating for years on the scope of this intervention, its relevance and procedure.
And Vladimir Putin is sure that his country is nowhere to be found. He is never told about anything.
