Credit cards in Ukraine are becoming more and more popular, and banks offer fast issuance of cards with a minimum package of documents. What is needed to get a card with a limit, how much can you count on without proof of income, what is the real rate and what are the key rules for repaying the loan? Consumer lending in Ukraine is gaining momentum in 2026. According to NBU monetary statistics, as of the beginning of May, the portfolio of consumer loans in banks exceeded UAH 324.4 billion. In addition, over the four months of 2026 it grew by UAH 29 billion – thus the increase was almost 10%. Banks predict further growth in the volume of loans to the population. The results of a survey on bank lending conditions for the first quarter, conducted by the National Bank, indicate that banks have softened credit standards for consumer loans. “In January–March, the level of approval of applications for household loans increased. Respondents noted an increase in the amounts and terms of consumer loans,” the survey results say.. Cards with a credit limit make up a significant share of consumer loan portfolios of Ukrainian banks. Which banks now offer cards with a limit, how do card lending rates change and are the terms of such loans favorable

Currently, almost all banks in Ukraine offer credit cards, for example, offers for cards with a limit are available in PrivatBank, Oschadbank, A-Bank, Idea Bank, Raiffeisen Bank, Universal Bank (monobank), OTP Bank, FUIB and other financial institutions.

" If previously the main factors of choice were the interest rate, the size of the credit limit and the length of the grace period, now the quality of the customer experience is becoming increasingly important,” says Vitaly Mogilev, director of the digital banking department at Idea Bank..

He notes: banks are actively competing through the development of mobile applications, speed of product processing, remote setting of a credit limit, personalized offers. “The modern client expects to gain access to a loan product as quickly and conveniently as possible, without unnecessary formalities,” the expert emphasizes.

Credit cards are an important modern financial instrument that is used for everyday payments.. According to expert Vitaly Mogilev, in conditions of economic uncertainty, people value the opportunity to have access to additional financial resources, and the development of non-cash payments and digital services has made using a credit limit easier and more convenient.

When applying for a credit card, people most often pay attention to two parameters: the grace period and the real interest rate.. However, other options are also important, for example, a fee for withdrawing cash from an ATM, a fee for transferring funds to an account in another bank, the ability to control the status of the limit and loan repayment in the application.

The real interest rate on credit cards in 2026 is on average 44% per annum; there are card offers on the market with a much higher rate - 75-82% per annum.

It is worth noting that the interest rate on a credit card is often not fixed: there is a rate of 0.01% per annum valid during the grace period, as well as a base rate applied when calculating the debt after the end of the grace period. And there is an increased rate that the bank can charge in case of overdue debt. All these details can be seen in the document “Information on the essential characteristics of the service”, which banks usually post on their official website and are obliged to provide to the consumer before signing the contract.

Bank commissions are another important condition, because it is better for the client to know in advance about all the payments that he will have to make. Payment by card at retail outlets and online stores is not charged, but transferring credit funds to a card account in another bank will already require the payment of a commission - 2-4% of the transfer amount. A commission may also be charged for P2P transfers through third-party services of other banks, most often it is 4% of the transfer amount. Withdrawal of credit funds from bank ATMs is also carried out with the payment of a commission of 4%.

Experts note: one of the main factors that should be taken into account when choosing a credit card is the length of the grace period. “Also important are the size of the credit limit, the speed of its installation and the ease of managing the card through the mobile application. Loyalty programs, bonuses and other available services create additional value for customers,” says Vitaly Mogilev, director of the digital banking department at Idea Bank..

Each bank has its own grace period in the terms of the credit card - this is the time during which the client can repay the debt by paying only 0.01% per annum. For example, at Idea Bank there is a grace period for the " Card"

The presence of a grace period allows clients to maintain payment discipline when repaying the debt and receive benefits, because interest on the debt is not accrued if the loan is repaid during the grace period. This is important, because the very philosophy of a credit card is normal everyday expenses. As Vitaly Mogilev explained, Ukrainians most often use credit cards for purchases in supermarkets, pharmacies, and consumer goods stores. " Separately, it is worth noting the growth in the share of online payments through digital wallets and payment services,” the expert noted.

However, the grace period has its own characteristics. For example, the bank’s terms and conditions may indicate that it is valid for 62 days. But a more detailed study of the conditions will show that such a period is valid from the moment the debt arose until the end of the calendar month following the date the debt arose, and only if it is repaid in full. In practice, this means the following: the client made a payment at the store on June 25 with a credit card, and he must fully repay the debt by July 31 in order to take advantage of the grace period offered by the bank.

What happens after the grace period ends Interest will be charged on the amount of the credit limit used by the client at the standard rate. It should be remembered that, regardless of whether the consumer is in a grace period or not, a monthly payment must be made (already with interest accrued), and the conditions of the banks stipulate what this minimum monthly payment should be. Usually we are talking about 4% of the debt amount, which the client must repay monthly using bank branches, self-service terminals or non-cash card replenishment.

Digital services of banks are rapidly changing and improving, which means that to obtain a credit card, customers are offered not to even contact branches. You can leave a request on the bank’s website, you can apply for a card in the bank’s application, you can use the help of the contact center to apply for a card. Some banks offer to download the application, go through identification in " If it is more convenient for the client to contact the branch, then the main documents will be a passport and the registration number of the taxpayer’s account card (formerly TIN). In this case, the client may be credited with a limit of 5-150 thousand on the card.. UAH. If it is important to have a higher limit on the card, then the bank must provide a certificate of income for the last six months.

" Bank with instant card activation, and the instant credit limit without income certificate is up to 150 thousand. UAH. The package of documents for issuing a card is very simple: only a passport and a certificate of the registration number of the taxpayer’s account card, if the loan amount is up to 150 thousand. UAH. The maximum credit limit on the new card is 500 thousand. UAH, grace period – up to 92 days, loan term – 1 year (with automatic extension), and the real annual rate – 47.11% or 81.37%,” said Vitaly Mogilev.

The credit card market in Ukraine continues to actively develop, and now many Ukrainians already have 1-2 credit cards. Of course, this is not yet the indicator for the USA, where usually one citizen opens 3-5 or more cards with a limit, but the dynamics are very noticeable. " At the same time, the level of penetration of credit cards in Ukraine is still significantly different from that of the United States, where the culture of using credit products has been formed for decades, starting from the 1950s. The Ukrainian market has the potential for further development; we are already developing a culture of responsible use of the credit limit, when a credit card is perceived not as a source of debt, but as a convenient tool for managing personal finances and a financial reserve in case of unexpected expenses,” noted the Idea Bank expert.

Competition in the credit card market will grow, and banks will compete on the quality of services and conditions, the key ones of which will remain the grace period and the real interest rate. " Among the priority areas are the further development of remote services, improvement of mobile banking, expansion of loyalty programs and the introduction of new opportunities for managing the credit limit. We see significant potential for the development of the card business in Ukraine and continue to work on creating modern, convenient and competitive products,” summed up Vitaly Mogilev, director of the digital banking department at Idea Bank..
