The influence of the mechanism of cross -border carbon adjustment (CBAM) on the Ukrainian economy in the short term will be limited and will affect only a few sectors. However, the greatest challenges for the country will be in the long run.
This was stated by the scientific director of the project Green Deal Ukraine Georg Tsahmann.
" I expect Ukraine to adapt, but we can see a certain deviation of trade from the EU, ”the expert noted.
According to him, possible changes in trade flows can affect Ukrainian metallurgy: “Ukraine now exports certain metallurgical products in the EU, and if then it finds that it is no longer competitive in the EU due to CBAM, it will try to sell these products to Turkey or to other markets”.
Tsakhmann emphasized that such permutations in world trade in carbon goods can be "
But in the long run CBAM can turn into a much more serious challenge for the country.
" And we already see these trends, the European commission has already proposed its first ideas to expand the scope of CBAM to additional sectors, ”he explained.
The expert noted that with the expansion of CBAM to a larger number of industries, the integration of Ukraine into the European chains of creating costs will become more complicated.
"
Recall, CBAM provides for the payment of carbon duties for the import of energy -intensive products in the EU. Ukraine, which has a significant share of coal generation and high -carbon industry, is part of the group of the most vulnerable countries.
