On February 8, the Baltic countries plan to disconnect their networks from the Russian energy system and synchronize them with continental Europe. Disconnecting Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia from the energy system controlled by the Kremlin is a victory of freedom.

The head of the foreign policy of the European Union (EU), ex-Prime Minister of Estonia Kai Callas called this a victory of freedom, reports LRT. The official ceremony will take place in Lithuania on February 9, it will be attended by the leaders of the Baltic countries and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Lyain.

" This is the victory of freedom and European unity, ”said Callas.

Disconnection from the energy system built in Soviet times and integration into the European network is a long -term goal of the Baltic governments, the obstacle of which was technical and financial difficulties. Synchronization with the West became even more urgent after the start of the large -scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, which forced the Baltic countries to worry about the fact that they could be the next goal of Moscow.

Three Baltic states ceased imports of Russian gas and electricity.

But the energy systems remained connected to Russia and Belarus - the BRELL energy system controlled by the Kremlin.

In addition, in Latvia they are going to physically block the power line to Russia, and the Lithuanian authorities plan to start the dismantling of high -voltage lines connecting the Russian Federation with its exclus - Kaliningrad region. After that, the region will be left without external access to electricity, however, it also has its own TPPs for generating electricity.
