USA and Colombia announced sanctions against each other. The incident occurred due to the refusal of Columbia to skip planes with deported Colombian illegal immigrants. But the sanctions did not come into force, as the Colombian authorities changed their minds and allowed ships with migrants to pass.

According to CNN, on January 26, US President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social page about introducing a number of sanctions against Colombia, including a 25% tariff on all goods from this country (increasing to 50% a week later), as well as a travel ban. The reason was a ban on the landing of two US military planes carrying deported illegal migrants earlier that day..

In response to this, Columbia President Gustavo Petro published on social networks X appeal, accusing his American colleague of racism. He assured that Colombia would not allow him to treat his citizens as criminals.

" But this will be difficult, because you consider me a representative of the lower race, but neither I nor anyone else in Colombia is one, ”writes Petro.

Against this background, the Colombian president announced retaliatory sanctions on all goods from the United States, as well as the organization of a flight to return Colombians from the United States - for this purpose the presidential plane will be used. At the same time, Petro assured that 15,660 US citizens are illegally in Colombia.

As a result, the trade war between the United States and Colombia did not take place - 49 minutes after Petro’s statement, the Colombian government agreed to Trump’s conditions and allowed planes with deported illegal immigrants from the United States to land. Therefore, sanctions will not come into force.
