Selling prices for onions began to rise again in Ukraine. Market operators report a possible shortage of quality products at the end of the season. Analysts of the EastFruit project told about this.
Market operators noted that onion production in Ukraine has significantly decreased this year. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, the percentage of substandard onions that cannot be stored for a long time has increased significantly.
According to analysts' daily monitoring, since the beginning of this week, Ukrainian farmers have raised selling prices for onions by an average of 16%.
According to experts, last Friday the main volumes of onions were sold by producers within the range of UAH 23-26/kg ($0.63-0.71/kg).. As of January 25, these products go on sale at 27-32 UAH/kg ($0.74-0.88/kg).
“The reason for the increase in prices for onions was, first of all, the limited supply of onions. Most of the farms seek, first of all, to sell products, the quality of which has begun to deteriorate rapidly as a result of long-term storage,” the experts noted..

It is reported that manufacturers want to leave high-quality onions in refrigerators and plan to start selling them no earlier than the beginning of spring.. Also, the reduction in the volume of imported onions from Central Asian countries provides significant support to prices..
Analysts stressed that onion prices in Ukraine are already on average 3.2 times higher than in the same period last year..
At the same time, producers are confident that the price of this product will rise further, since the stocks of high-quality onions in the farms are very limited.. Also, most farmers plan to continue to revise prices upwards while maintaining current sales rates..
