Belgians hand over 71% of used batteries and batteries for recycling - more than residents of other European countries. In 5 EU countries, more than half of the batteries, after serving their time, are sent for recycling, and not to landfills. In addition to Belgium, these are Luxembourg (63% of batteries are recycled), Hungary and Lithuania (53% each) and the Czech Republic (52%).

On average, in the EU, 44% of the batteries are recycled, writes Europuls.

In the EU, a directive has been in effect since 2008, according to which by 2020 at least 45% of batteries and accumulators should be recycled - today 8 EU countries have taken this bar.

In addition, the European Battery Alliance has been working since last year - an association of research centers and battery manufacturers from different EU countries that are developing new safer ways to store electricity.. Their task is to replace disposable batteries with more efficient and environmentally friendly devices..
