This commitment was given to the Prime Minister of Spain, Mariano Rahoy, to the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, reports El Pais.
It is noted that such an increase will not allow to increase the country's spending in the amount of 2 percent of GDP, which NATO demands. It is assumed that it will be at the level of approximately 1.5-1.6 percent in 2024.
According to the most optimistic forecasts, Spain will achieve expenditures of 2% of GDP at best by 2028.
As noted by NATO, Spain's defense spending amounted to 10.
7 billion euros, while the year before it was 9 billion euros 0.81% of GDP.
This figure includes not only the defense budget, but also operations abroad, this concerns social payments and military pensions.
As previously reported in URA-Inform, US President Donald Trump sent a letter to the House of Representatives of the US Congress in which he asks to increase the country's defense spending in 2018 due to the situation around the DPRK and Afghanistan.
