Their total amount was about three million dollars. Transfers were made in 2012-2013, and the money passed through offshore accounts and fell into the United States of America.

Buzzfeed reports that law enforcement officers drew attention to these transactions in 2012, when they began to study the possible assistance of Manafort to the regime of former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovich, close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

For the first time, remittances were noticed by US financial institutions that are legally required to report to the Treasury Department any transactions that they consider suspicious, since the Federal Law requires financial institutions to file reports on cash transactions that exceed ten thousand US dollars per day.

Thus, sources in law enforcement agencies reported that companies sent money in US dollars without explanation of origin and destination.

The countries in which these operations took place, in particular Cyprus, the Caribbean state of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, are notoriously offshore for money laundering.

Investigators also found evidence that the origin of money was hidden behind many "layers" of companies. Most of these sums ended up on the accounts of construction companies, hedge funds and even a car dealership.

Recall, as reported URA-Inform, in Luxembourg on Thursday, October 19, the European Court confirmed the legality of the freezing of assets of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his son.
