Britain lived Friday, April 21, without using coal to generate electricity, the BBC reported citing data from the national electricity operator National Grid.

This day has already been called a turning point in the history of the state.

The UK government intends to close the last coal-fired power plants by 2025 to reduce carbon-containing emissions April 21 was the first since 1882, when coal was not used to generate electricity. The National Grid emphasizes that this is the first such day since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.

At the same time, the electricity operator notes that coal still remains one of the most important sources of energy.
