The United States of America can return money to Ukraine from the accounts of former Prime Minister Pavel Lazarenko, if these funds are used to finance targeted programs under the control of the US government.
"It will not just be money transferred to the budget of Ukraine. Certain conditions and tasks for which this money will be spent will be determined in a certain way, "said Deputy Prosecutor General Yevgeny Enin in an interview with UNN, published on Wednesday, April 19.
In particular, the funds can be directed at combating poverty, medical reform and overcoming corruption.
Enin noted that the transfer of funds may take some time, since they are placed on accounts in five different jurisdictions.
"In some jurisdictions, we can talk about almost automatic recognition of the decisions of the American court, in some jurisdictions we will have to conduct bipartite or trilateral negotiations involving the US government. And then we will see how the process of refunds will move, "explained the deputy prosecutor general.
Pavel Lazarenko was the Prime Minister of Ukraine in 1996-1997. After the conflict with President Leonid Kuchma and with the beginning of the criminal prosecution, he announced his departure to the opposition and soon fled abroad.
In 1999, he was detained in the US while trying to cross the border on a fake Panama passport. Lazarenko was accused of laundering money obtained illegally. In 2006, an American court sentenced him to nine years in prison and $ 10 million in fine. After six years, Lazarenko was released.
The state of Lazarenko is estimated at $ 250 million. This money, claimed by a number of creditors, is the subject of a 15-year trial. Ukraine seeks to return these funds to the state budget.
