Immediately three cubs are “raised” by the Penguin family near the Academician Vernadsky station: such offspring is rare for these birds, since the submanic penguins that live here usually put aside no more than two eggs. And such a unique family on the island is generally one, as the biologist Svetozar Davydenko noted. This was told by experts of the National Antarctic Scientific Center on the official page on Facebook on February 2.
Polards note that the phenomenon, when these Penguins lay as many as three eggs very rarely, because there are several reasons for this, in particular, difficulties in providing chicks with the necessary food.
"
However, the family that Ukrainian polar explorers stumbled upon was able to cope with such a mission. Researchers claim that the chicks have been three weeks and they are already quite adults, and, apparently, their parents coped with their mission: their children look frozen and completely healthy. However, unfortunately, in the nature of these birds it often occurs differently: when more than two penguins appear, they often do not survive.
It is worth adding that recently near the Academician Vernadsky station more and more Penguin cubs. Researchers reported the latest statistics.
" Adults - approximately 4 thousand, ”scientists say.
They are closely monitoring these birds, because the migration of subantarctic penguins over the past 20 years is one of the evidence of warming in Antarctic. Researchers constantly calculate the number of birds on the island, monitor their behavior, and especially the appearance of offspring.
Previously, Focus has already demonstrated how the bird " Then four chicks were growing on the island, as it became known on January 17.
Focus also published footage, how the chicks on the island are fed.
