Scientists from the Korea Institute of Advanced Technology (KAIST) have developed the finest threads with highly efficient organic LEDs. The technology will allow to embed miniature OLED-displays in fabrics with a diameter of 90 microns, which is comparable to the diameter of a human hair. The results of the study were published in the journal Nano Letters. A group of Korean scientists managed to "weave" organic light-emitting diodes into strands, which in thickness are inferior to human hair. At the same time, they are distinguished by high efficiency and durability - two properties that are usually not enough for wearable OLED displays. According to Science Daily, the brightness of fibers with OLED was 10 000 cd / m2, and the efficiency - 11 cd / A. Fabrics with interwoven light-emitting diodes can withstand deformation up to 4,3%, losing thus not more than 10% of productivity. To achieve such results, scientists from KAIST have developed a methodology for creating OLED specifically for thin fibers. At weaving low temperatures are applied, therefore the technology can be used even on a fabric web and knitted fabrics without infringement of their integrity.

Also, the development of Korean scientists allows you to create OLED-threads with a diameter of 300 microns to 90 microns, which is almost comparable to the thickness of a human hair. Scientists hope that the new technology will make wearable OLED-displays more affordable. In 2016, the same group of researchers from KAIST developed a dip coating method that allows uniformly placing layers of polymer LEDs with high brightness even on a thin tissue. This method they just applied in their last development. Also in August, scientists presented the world's most flexible OLED display on cloth. LEDs continued to work properly even with a bend radius of 2 mm.
