The Spanish National Police, in cooperation with the FBI, Europol and law enforcement agencies of other countries, detained a Ukrainian citizen suspected of involvement in cyber attacks against banks around the world, including in Russia.
The total damage caused by cyber grouping is about $ 1 billion, writes El Mundo.
34-year-old Ukrainian Denis K. arrived in Spain in 2014. On 6 March 2018, he was detained in Alicante (autonomous community of Valencia).
According to journalists, the Ukrainian was the think tank of the Cobalt group, which operated since 2013 and received fraudulently hundreds of millions of dollars.
The grouping included three more people: two Ukrainians and Russians.
According to the Spanish Interior Ministry, the criminals managed to organize hacker attacks on 300-400 banks in Russia. At the same time, of 50 Russian banks, money was stolen. It was Russian banks that were the main target of the criminals, although the attacks extended to other countries.
With the help of malicious software they infested computer systems of banks, which allowed them to withdraw money from ATMs at a distance, change bank balances and modify accounts.
