More than 10 billion euros from the frozen by the decision of the United Nations in 2011, Libyan assets disappeared from the accounts of Euroclear Bank in Belgium in 2013-2017, the Belgian weekly Le Vif.

As explained in the publication, these funds were controlled by the closest surrounding of the ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

As of November 29, 2013, 16.1 billion euros were in four accounts opened for the Libyan Investment Authority and Libyan Foreign Investment Company.

The Belgian authorities found the disappearance of a significant part of these funds in the fall of 2017, when the investigation into money laundering intended to seize 16 billion euros. It turned out that in the four accounts there was just over 5 billion euros.

At the same time, according to the Ministry of Finance, Belgium did not take decisions to thaw these holdings.

According to the publication, now the question arises whether Belgium controlled the freezing of these funds.
