On the afternoon of October 5, during the preparatory work on the reservoir located on the territory of the commodity-raw materials production of the refinery in the Nizhny Novgorod region, the Kstovo district was ignited, followed by cotton. The refinery is owned by LukoilNizhegorodneftorgsintez.

The first to catch fire was a tank with 50 thousand tons of gasoline. Cotton was followed by a fire. The fire spread to the second tank. During the fire, at least four contractor workers were killed. Earlier it was reported that five people were missing. Fire extinguishing involved more than 240 firefighters with the support of 50 units of equipment, including two fire trains. Two helicopters were prepared for readiness.

It is assumed that the cause of the fire was a violation of the rules of industrial safety.

The smoke of the fire covered the whole sky in Kstovo, the residents had to close the windows to avoid getting into the houses burning in the smoke. The roads in the district had to be closed. Due to heavy smoke, traffic police officers manually controlled traffic. Three hours later, the open burning was liquidated.

The fire did not pose a threat to other sites in the industrial site. Spill the fire area. Production continues to work in normal mode. Ecological damage to the area is not caused.
