100 kilometers southwest of the US military base in Yokosuka, located on the territory of Japan, the American destroyer USS Fitzgerald collided with a Philippine container ship. This was reported by representatives of the US Army. Two crew members of the USS Fitzgerald, including the ship's commander, were taken to the hospital by helicopter.

According to Japanese media, seven US sailors were missing.

The destroyer suffered damage on the starboard side, as a result of which water penetrated the ship. USS Fitzgerald retained the ability to move independently, although its engine is not used at full capacity. The Japanese coast guard is on the scene and is ready to provide assistance at the request of the US military.
