The authorities of the Brazilian Salvador are sounding the alarm - the former capital of the country was attacked by the calves of mice, vampires. This is reported on Tuesday, May 30, The Telegraph. Citizens and tourists were recommended to close all windows at night and try not to go out.

According to the publication, after the "bloody feast" of vampires, one person has already died and another 40 have been hospitalized, having become infected with rabies. Doctors are asked to immediately address to the hospital all those who were bitten by bats, who woke up at night and found bloody footprints on the sheet.

"Only on one street in the historic center of the city, ten people were bitten," said Edson Ribeiro, a spokesman for the Bahia Health Department.

Now all the victims are in hospitals under medical supervision. They are prescribed special treatment for rabies.

To reduce the risk of spreading a deadly disease, veterinarians also vaccinate all cats and dogs.

Earlier in March this year in the southwest of the state, a 46-year-old farmer died who was bitten by a bat while milking cows. Unfortunately, the man turned to the doctors only a few weeks later, when it was already late. This was the first case of rabies, registered in Bahia since 2004.

The state is proud of its beaches, national parks and Afro-Brazilian heritage. The region is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country. However, the same historical churches and colonial mansions, which annually attract hundreds of thousands of tourists, are also ideal habitats for blood-sucking vampires, the newspaper notes..

Currently, the Brazilian authorities are preparing to produce leaflets and posters in different languages ??to warn foreign tourists about the dangers of meeting with bats. According to Ribeiro, since the saliva of the bloodsuckers contains painkillers and anticoagulant enzymes, the victims learn that they were bitten only when they wake up in the morning in blood-soaked beds. Meanwhile, heavy rains in Salvador, together with a public awareness campaign, led to a sharp reduction in the number of recorded bites in recent days.
