FIFA will officially discuss the possibility of restricting the participation of Russian national teams in international tournaments in the near future. Sky News reports about it.

For information, the nutrition will be submitted for review after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has issued a recommendation for external Russian teams and informed international sports. This potentially opens the way to the participation of the Russian team in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

A Sky News commentator from FIFA confirmed that they are already aware of the decisions of the IOC.

“FIFA is aware of the IOC’s decision to immediately reduce the membership of the Russian Olympic Committee. We are analyzing the decision, first of all, to determine the further steps together with the corresponding sealed sides,” the world football organization said.

It seems likely that Russian teams were on the sidelines in FIFA and UEFA tournaments after the start of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Through this, the Russian national team missed the selection for the world championships 2022 and 2026, as well as the women's world championship 2023, so the Russian clubs were excluded from.

Previously, FIFA President Gianni Infantino had already stated that the nutritional turn of the Russian teams must be considered, in his opinion, the official sanctions “did not achieve their goal, but only created more disappointment”.

Nowadays, the remaining solution to the possible return of the Russian teams is lost to the international federations. The IOC has voted what they themselves should consider, whether they should allow Russian teams to participate in their tournaments, and also whether they would allow the destruction of the sovereign symbols of Russia at the time of destruction.
