It sometimes happens that the history of the manuscript itself is no less interesting than the book....

We are talking about the recently published work of Timofey Brydun “Poltava Povit”. The author changed many professions and places of residence (not always of his own free will), at the age of 60 he was sentenced to 10 years in the Gulag camps in Siberia as an “enemy of the people” and served this term “from bell to bell”. From there he returned on foot to Poltava (since he was not given a single document in the camp), where he learned that his family was in Lvov.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Brydun worked as a statistician in the provincial zemstvo of Poltava, systematically traveled around the settlements of the Poltava district of the Poltava province, collected and systematized a variety of information. Of course, I handed over the reports to my superiors.. However, he decided that this information might be of interest to a wide range of readers, and therefore wrote manuscripts. But for unknown reasons I never published them..

After the death of Timofey Brydun, his papers - manuscripts, correspondence, notes - were kept by his eldest great-grandson, who lived in Kyiv. He also didn’t get around to dealing with his great-grandfather’s legacy for decades, and it was a bag of papers about 25 kilograms. Therefore, in the early 90s, his enterprising wife handed over all this to waste paper in exchange for soap, toilet paper, shampoo....

The large family was shocked by this act, but could not do anything and came to terms with the loss. However, the waste paper collector was obviously a wise man, so he realized the value of what fell into his hands and took the manuscripts to the National Library of Ukraine.. Vernadsky, where they waited in the wings.

Timofey Brydun’s manuscript “Misto Khorol ta yogo povit” has been known to Khorol and Poltava local historians for decades. Thanks to their concern, photo and typewritten copies were made from Brydun’s manuscript, and even a geographical and name index was compiled. But the text was not known to a wide range of readers. Therefore, an initiative group was created, which included a professor from the department of world history, religious studies and methods of teaching them at Poltava National Pedagogical University.. Korolenko, member of the National Union of Local History of Ukraine (NSCU) Irina Petrenko; master of history and archeology, member of NSKU, history teacher in the village of Goroshino Nikolai Kostenko and local historian, history and geography teacher from the city of Khorol Andrey Kozlov. It was decided to publish the manuscript in full, make comments and notes to it, and add photographs. And find benefactors for the publication.

Information about the presentation of Timofey Brydun’s book “Misto Khorol and Yogo Povit”, which took place last year at the Poltava Regional Scientific Universal Library named after. Kotlyarevsky, his great-great-granddaughter living in Israel accidentally saw on the Internet and told her relative about it. Therefore, the great-granddaughter of Timofey Brydun Olga Bryndalskaya, piano teacher at the Kyiv Children's Music Academy named after. Chamberzhi, found Irina Petrenko.

Recently, at the Poltava State Agrarian University there was a presentation of another published manuscript by Timofey Brydun - “Poltava Povit”, which was also kept for a long time at the Institute of Manuscripts of the National Library of Ukraine.. Vernadsky. The book contains detailed descriptions of the largest villages of the Poltava region - the history of their foundation from the 18th century to the beginning of the Bolshevik era, biographical information about the persons mentioned, name and geographical indexes, thematic illustrations. The publication deals with the territories of the current Poltava, Dikan, Chutovsk, Novosanzharsk, Reshetilovsk, Machukhovsk and Shishatsk communities.

Irina Petrenko again took on the burden of finding funds for the book. The publication was sponsored by famous farmers of the Poltava region, private individuals. And the book already lives its own life. Olga Bryndalskaya also came from the capital to the presentation.

By the way, the third manuscript of Timofey Brydun is already being prepared for publication - memories of Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, heard from his sister Olga. For the last 10 years of her life, Timofey Brydun was her personal doctor (he also had the specialty of a paramedic). Therefore, she told him a lot about her brother-writer and their family.
