The Ukrainian Football Association commented on the absence of Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin from the Ukrainian national team at the first playoff match for the World Cup 2026.

According to The Athletic, the list of players was formed approximately two days before the match against Sweden. During that period, Lunin did not have a stable playing experience with the club, which became a key factor in the coaching staff’s decision.

The UAF has loudly said that there is no end to the ongoing controversy between Sergiy Rebrov and the goalkeeper. The team continues to watch the goalkeeper's uniform and look at him as a candidate for a position in the future.

This season Lunin played 5 matches for Real Madrid, conceding 10 goals. Just after the injury of Thibault Courtois, the Ukrainian lost the chance to play for Madrid's two remaining teams - against Manchester City in the Champions League and Atletico in the Spanish Championship.
