WP: Speaker McCarthy changed rhetoric about Ukraine a week after firing Fox News anchor, and it's not necessarily a coincidence

One of the best things that could happen with U.S. support for Ukraine was that anchor Tucker Carlson was taken off the air by Fox News last week.. Carlson was perhaps the most famous and influential critic of American aid.. But at the same time he was very radical and resorted to conspiracy theories..

The Fox News host has been candid about actually rooting for Russia, suggesting that Vladimir Putin isn't all that bad.. Carlson falsely claimed that the U.S. military was fighting alongside the Ukrainians and used an apparently false document to prove his case..

“But against this background, it is probably also worth recalling the words of the Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy, said by him on Monday. And it is quite possible that these two events are connected,” writes the Washington Post..

During a visit to Israel, McCarthy expressed his strongest support for Ukraine so far. Although he has previously spoken coldly about it and warned that the House of Representatives under the control of the Republican Party can pull the strings leading to the purse.

At a press conference in Jerusalem, a reporter who introduced himself as a Russian said that McCarthy personally does not " But McCarthy himself objected.

“He said that I do not support aid to Ukraine? No, I vote for helping Ukraine. I support aid to Ukraine. I do not support what your country has done to Ukraine. I also do not support your killing of children,” said the speaker of the lower house of Congress.

" And we will continue to support Ukraine because the rest of the world sees the situation as it is,” he added..

The Washington Post notes that McCarthy's comments came at a time when supporters of Ukraine in the Republican Party began to assert themselves.. While Republican voters have slowly but steadily turned against maintaining the current level of U.S. aid over the past year. Polls this year show that about half of Republicans think US aid to Ukraine is too much..

Supporters of Kyiv in the Republican Party were especially noticeable in March. Then they criticized the words of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who called Russia's invasion of Ukraine a " According to critics, it was a dismissive description of the situation.. Around the same time, McCarthy said: " But he also backed up his comment with the thesis of the Republican Party that "

“This is where McCarthy’s new comments are especially noticeable.. He strongly condemned the Russian invasion in new terms. But it should also emphasize the question he was answering. The question was not that he was against aid to Ukraine, period. It consisted in the fact that he opposes " This wording is close to the thesis of " And McCarthy could have easily repeated the old position, but he didn't..

McCarthy also said that " And it looks like it was a message to Republicans like Matt Gates and Marjorie Taylor Green.. They joined Carlson to try and push the party in an isolationist direction..

McCarthy's comments actually sound very similar to those of another member of the Republican Party who has probably become the most prominent proponent of keeping aid to Ukraine.. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

McConnell consistently makes not only moral but also pragmatic arguments in favor of helping Ukraine. He and other politicians have argued that this is a relatively cost-effective way to advance US interests, given that Russia's troubles in the war have undermined its status on the world stage..

“It looks like leading Republicans in both the House of Representatives and the Senate sound about the same right now.. And McCarthy's move is important because he is perhaps the most important figure in this matter.. He is the man who leads the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, where further aid faces the greatest hurdles..

One of the lessons here seems to be that McCarthy is willing to spend some of the right-wing political capital he has received lately.. We could go on and on about his strategy for setting a new US government debt ceiling.. But it shows that the speaker of the House of Representatives is at least able to reach an agreement with his party and that he has some understanding with the "

" Just three months ago, conservative former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson suggested Republicans were too afraid of Carlson to stand up for Ukraine..

"

Later that month, the Washington Post wrote that the GOP hawks with a tough stance on Russia were slow to act..

“As the Republican Party’s position on Ukraine shifts, we note a lack of response from the party’s more hardline wing and those who believe the conflict is about vital US foreign policy issues.. This relatively muted response is no doubt due, at least in part, to a fear of alienating the likes of Tucker Carlson of Fox News (as Boris Johnson recently did) and more Ukraine-skeptical GOP voters..

According to the American edition, McCarthy could change his rhetoric under the influence of many factors.. Among them is the recent Russian missile attack that killed children.. And McCarthy just mentioned it. But atrocities have been committed before.

“And it’s hard to believe that it’s pure coincidence that McCarthy comes out and talks about this just a week after firing a man he was very worried about.. At least McCarthy no longer has to prepare for what's to come on Fox News primetime..
