President Volodymyr Zelensky is asked to stop state funding of political parties during martial law in Ukraine, and to direct the released funds to more urgent needs. A corresponding petition was posted on the official website of the head of state, the author of which is a member of the National Union of Journalists Sergei Dremov.

He proposes to redirect the money that the state provides to the parties, in particular, to finance the Armed Forces of Ukraine, social protection of the military and their families, as well as support for other most vulnerable segments of the population.

Referring to the relevant laws, the author of the petition noted that in 2022, about 797 million hryvnias were allocated from the state budget for the statutory activities of political parties (taking into account the reduction by the Cabinet of Minister of this funding by 10% last April). The funds were distributed as follows:.

Serhiy Dremov added that in June 2022, the head of the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption, Oleksandr Novikov, addressed the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk with a proposal to suspend public spending for parties during the war, but the letter was ignored.

“Considering all of the above, I am writing to you with a proposal: to initiate amendments to the Laws of Ukraine “On Political Parties in Ukraine”, “On the State Budget of Ukraine for 2023” as soon as possible, thus stopping state funding of political parties for the entire period of validity in; according to the first part of Article 101 of the Law of Ukraine “On the Rules of Procedure of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine”, to determine the relevant bills as urgent,” the petition says.

At the time of publication, the appeal to Zelensky has over 1,300 signatures.. There are still 88 days left to recruit the required 25,000.

Previously, the required number of signatures was collected by a petition to the President of Ukraine demanding to resume declaring the status of officials and deputies.. Subsequently, Zelensky responded to it, drawing attention to the existence of a draft law registered in the Rada that has such a norm.. The profile committee recommended that the document be adopted as a basis, which has not yet been done.
