For the first time in history, the Ukrainian national karate team won gold in the team kumite competition at the European Championships in Spain.
In the final, Ukrainians Stanislav Goruna, Valeriy Chebotar, Rizvan Talibov, Andriy Zaplitny, Andriy Toroshenko, Valeriy Sonnykh and Konstantin Tsymbal defeated the French team - 3:2.
Kumite - the concept of Japanese martial arts, which includes all types of fighting on the tatami, is one of the main sections of modern karate, along with kata and kihon.
Note that this is the fifth medal of Ukraine in the men's team kumite at the European Championships. Previously, Ukrainians won bronze medals in 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022.
At the current European Championship, this is the fourth award for Ukraine - the gold medals were won by Andriy Zaplitny and Anzhelika Terlyuga, and the silver went to Anita Seregina.
