On the territory of Ukraine, the number of people who consider it appropriate to celebrate the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation on May 8 is growing, while support for the appropriateness of celebrating the Day of Victory over Nazism on May 9 is decreasing.. The change in the opinion of the population against the backdrop of the Russian war against our state is evidenced by a survey of the Democratic Initiatives Foundation named after Ilko Kucheriv and the sociological service of the Razumkov Center, conducted from December 13 to 21, 2022.
According to the results, more than a third of respondents (35%) believe that Ukraine should celebrate both of the mentioned dates. A little less, 32%, consider it appropriate to celebrate only the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation on May 8, and 16% still recognize only the Day of Victory over Nazism on May 9.
At the same time, the distribution of responses differs markedly by region.. For example, in the western regions, more than half (54%) of the respondents consider it necessary to celebrate a memorable date only on May 8, while in the south only about 7% of respondents support this position..
In the southern part of Ukraine, 35% of the study participants expressed a desire only to celebrate Victory Day on May 9. Their position in the West was supported by only about 3% of respondents.
Celebrations of both dates are considered appropriate by the majority of respondents in the south - 53%. Average values \u200b\u200bwere obtained in the central (37%) and eastern regions (34%). Least of all people approve of this option in the western region of Ukraine - 24.5%.
The authors noted that during a similar survey in 2021, only 9% of respondents supported the celebration of the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation on May 8 throughout Ukraine - this option was unpopular. At the same time, the option of celebrating Victory Day over Nazism on May 9 was approved by 31% of respondents - most of all in the south and east of the state.
At the same time, there was greater support for celebrating both dates.. This option was chosen by 41% of the participants: most of all - in the west of Ukraine (49%), and least of all - in the east (32%).

" Expectedly, there is a correlation with what people think about the collapse of the USSR and the condemnation of the USSR as a communist totalitarian regime.. Those who do not condemn the USSR are much more likely to consider it appropriate to celebrate only May 9,"
Recall that in October 2022, the results of a sociological survey by the Razumkov Center showed that in Ukraine 87% of citizens do not seek to restore the Soviet Union.. This number has risen markedly over the past year..
