Volunteers distribute food to gypsy families in slums on the outskirts of the Hungarian city of Miskolc.

Under quarantine, many locals were left without any income..

Among them - Robert, father of four children. Like many Hungarian gypsies, he was interrupted by casual earnings.. Recently, he was a builder. Now no work. Social packages - too, since it worked unofficially.

Robert made some food supplies with his last money, but he may soon be disconnected from the electricity for non-payment, and then everything will go bad.

The coronavirus statistics in Hungary are relatively low - just over 3,000 patients and about 350 dead.. Perhaps because there are few tests in the country.

Out of 10 million Hungarians, about a million live below the poverty line. Including about 300 thousand gypsies.

The risk of the spread of COVID-19 in gypsy villages is particularly high. People here live tightly, in poor sanitary conditions and with poor access to medical care. In addition, Gypsies are not used to maintaining social distance, and also often went to work, including in Western Europe, where there are especially many coronavirus infected.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government has adopted a package of measures designed to mitigate the economic impact of several weeks of quarantine. But activists say the measures are mainly aimed at enterprises and do not take into account the urgent needs of vulnerable groups, including Roma.

Authorities claim that measures will benefit all Hungarians without exception.

From May 4, Hungary began to weaken the penalties. Activists worry that now the virus will be able to more easily penetrate the countryside where most Roma live.
