On Sunday evening, adherents of Judaism will begin to celebrate the festival of light - Hanukkah.

Tradition connects Hanukkah with Jewish rebellion 167 g. to n. against the Syrian king Antiochus IV, who wanted to forcibly introduce the Jews to the ancient Greek polytheism.

After expelling invaders from Israel, Jews rebuilt their desecrated temple. On the day of its consecration, the main temple lamp - the menorah, whose fire must be maintained constantly, should be lit.. But there was very little oil for the lamp, and it took eight days to make a new one. When, with the help of the found oil, they lit a menorah, the fire burned without interruption for eight days.

In memory of this event, Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days, each evening lighting one new candle in a special festive eight-candlestick..
