The General Secretary is dissatisfied with the work of the naval forces of the Alliance, lamenting the activation of Russian submarines in the North Atlantic. He also added that after the end of the Cold War, NATO reduced its capabilities at sea, especially in the fight and surveillance of underwater complexes. Stoltenberg, in view of recent developments with Russian submarines, called on NATO members to think about the creation of a fleet for cruising in the Atlantic Ocean to protect the transport routes between North America and Europe.
It is also necessary to ensure the safety of tourist and freight transport. New units can be created as early as 2018.
As reported in URA-Inform, earlier the North Atlantic alliance agreed to extend the mandate of Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg for two years until September 30, 2020.
