Scientists from the University of Utrecht (Denmark) examined 156 children who received penicillin for three days about sore throats compared to their peers taking a placebo for similar indications.

It was found that penicillin had no significant effect on the duration of the disease and the likelihood of recurrence of streptococcal infection. General practitioners are advised to limit the indications for prescribing antibiotics to cases of severe infection, with difficulty drinking, angina, a high risk of rheumatism, anatomical or immunological defects. Antibacterial therapy is also necessary for a high prevalence of streptococcal infections in the team.
