Moldovan President Igor Dodon wants to skim the cream both from the East and from the West, that is, to receive economic dividends from both the association with the European Union and cooperation with Russia. However, it is not worth taking all his words at face value - in any case, part of the pre-election promises is already forgotten, experts say..
Dodon contradicts his own election program. In particular, he promised that, having become president, denounced the association agreement between Moldova and the European Union. Now he declares that the path of Moldova is "the policy of all azimuths", that is, cooperation with both the East and the West, an example is given by leading research worker of RISI Alexander Shevchenko. Therefore, the current words of Dodon on the possible accession of the republic to the Eurasian Economic Union (ЕАЭС), which he said the other day during his visit to Belarus, should not be considered a plan for action. At least, while this is in principle impossible, the "Free Press" opinion of the expert.
In April 2017 g. The Moldovan and the EEA signed a memorandum of cooperation. Then Chisinau applied for an observer status in this organization. Dodon explained his desire to get closer to Moscow and other members of the EAES by the fact that in the three years of association with the EU, Moldova has not acquired anything, but lost a lot. In particular, the volume of investments fell to a record low level for the last 20 years. In addition, European goods poured into the market, which are subsidized in the EU countries - this, according to Dodon, is killing local producers.
But even if the Moldovan head actually decides to break the agreement with the EU to strengthen ties with the EAEC, it will be difficult to do so. The parliamentary majority and the government represent forces supporting the course towards European integration. However, next year in Moldova there will be parliamentary elections. If the majority of seats get socialists, then the Russophobic voices in politics will be less audible. That's when we will talk about the accession of Chisinau to the EESP, there will be grounds.
Recall, this week was put a point in the conclusion of the Agreement on Association of the European Union with Ukraine.
