Screening of patients suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus allows for the timely detection of pancreatic cancer, reducing the number of deaths. Experts from the UK believe that high blood sugar levels can be an early sign of aggressive tumors, which are usually found too late to be treated.

The study of medical records of 10,000 patients showed that there is a link between diabetes and pancreatic cancer. So, some people were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer one year after they had type 2 diabetes mellitus. Only less than 1% of patients with pancreatic cancer live for 10 years after diagnosis, so timely detection of the disease is important for survival.

Diabetes is a condition in which the body does not produce enough insulin - a hormone responsible for processing sugars from food into energy that can be used by the body. The primary body responsible for the production of insulin is the pancreas. However, doctors do not yet know whether diabetes contributes to the development of pancreatic cancer or whether diabetes is a potential consequence of developing cancer.
