Scientists have discovered in the Antarctic ice shelf of Larsen a new giant crack, which is located 10 kilometers from the fault, which was discovered in December 2016. According to Gizmodo, the appearance of cracks indicates that the glacier may soon "slip" into the ocean.
A new crack was seen in the pictures taken on May 1. It is a branch of the main fault, the length of which at the moment is 160 kilometers. Researchers emphasize that since February this year it has remained stable, and the new crack is the first significant change recorded since.
At the same time, scientists suggest that sooner or later the glacier or a large part of it will be in the ocean, and the shelf will lose about 10% of its area. According to researchers, this can happen earlier than expected.
