During the presentation of the flagship smartphone LG G6 at the MWC 2017 show in Barcelona most of the time the manufacturer has given an explanation of why the screen instead of the standard 16: 9 in their new device uses a matrix with a ratio of 18: 9. Speakers argued that it is the ideal solution for content consumption and the use of a smartphone. Moreover, according to available information, the new flagship of Samsung will be the same aspect ratio. But not all the giants of the market are going to abandon the standard 16: 9.

At the MWC 2017 exhibition, Sony's marketing director Don Mesa, during a conversation with journalists, categorically stated that in the near future they do not plan to use screens with an 18: 9 aspect ratio in their smartphones for two reasons. First, Sony is quite satisfied with aspect ratio 16: 9. The second reason, according to Don Mesa, is entertainment. All movies and games are now targeted primarily at the ratio of 16: 9. He said that Sony is unlikely to switch to the use of the new format, if it does not make Sony Pictures.
