Active nationalist fanatics from Ukraine and Poland are causing damage to both countries, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said as the escalation erupted between Kiev and Warsaw. He added that the Russians are reacting favorably to this situation, so the parties must more actively counter disinformation and hostile propaganda.
“Russians are rubbing their hands when they see that they can ignite this emotional conflict between Poland and Ukraine,” says Tusk. “So we will be very active in trying to counter disinformation and hostile propaganda, even though it sounds like a slogan.”.
He added that he counts on the insight of all “decent, wise and responsible Ukrainians”. He also hopes that the Poles will “control these excessive emotions”.
Tusk mentioned that the presidents of Ukraine and Poland Vladimir Zelensky and Karol Nawrocki met at the NATO summit, adding that he, however, does not know how the conversation went. However, he analyzes the signals that leaders are sending publicly, and they indicate that they clearly understand that “the crisis has gone too far and is damaging both Poland and Ukraine.”.

The conflict between Ukraine and Poland flared up after President Vladimir Zelensky, at the request of SOF fighters, awarded the special unit “North” the honorary name “named after the Heroes of the UPA”, and when Warsaw called for this decision to be reversed, he refused to do so. After this, the Polish leader Karol Nawrocki initiated the procedure for depriving Zelensky of the highest state award - the Order of the White Eagle. He did not wait for its completion - the Polish prime minister never signed this decision - and returned the order ahead of schedule, warning Navrotsky that raising ratings by inciting hatred towards Ukrainians is a bad story. Representatives of the expert community are also convinced that there are electoral motives behind Poland’s decision. Warsaw, meanwhile, rejects any accusations of speculation on issues of historical memory.
