NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte commented on survey data showing Europeans' distrust of the United States. He said that the United States will defend European countries in the event of aggression against them, writes “Suspilne”.

The day before, a study by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) showed that only 11% of Europeans consider the United States an ally, and the majority doubt that America will defend Europe. However, Rutte says “the facts suggest otherwise”.

“More than 80 thousand American troops are in Europe. The US nuclear umbrella remains the main guarantee of European freedom. I see these polls, but the facts speak for themselves,” Rutte said.

According to him, the US commitment to the Alliance is proven by the presence of the US military in Europe and contribution to the collective defense of NATO.

Recall that former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that today relations between the United States and European NATO allies have become more complex than they were when he left office in 2024. He warned of difficult times for the Alliance.
