Ukrainian Greco-Roman wrestling champion Sergei Shumilov died in the war against the Russian occupiers. The 31-year-old athlete and serviceman of the Ukrainian Armed Forces gave his life defending the country’s independence, the Greco-Roman Wrestling Ukraine Telegram channel reports.. Sergei Shumilov died on January 4, 2026. The report notes that he joined ZSU at the beginning of 2022, leaving his sports career to protect the state.

Sergei Shumilov was a candidate master of sports, a multiple champion and prize-winner of all-Ukrainian and international competitions in Greco-Roman wrestling. He was a student of the Nikolaev Children's Sports School No. 1 and a graduate of the Nikolaev Higher School of Physical Culture.

In Nikolaev they also confirmed the death of the athlete, emphasizing that the sports family of the city suffered an irreparable loss. Sergei is left with a mother and a small son, who will now grow up without a father.
