The prospect of a quick ceasefire in the war in Ukraine looks dubious, says Matthias Schmale, UN Assistant Secretary General, Permanent Representative and Coordinator of Humanitarian Programs in Ukraine. He said this during a conversation with journalists at the UN headquarters in New York, Ukrinform reports..

“Although there were moments of cautious optimism, I do not see the prerequisites for the end of this terrible tragedy,” Schmale said. He added that in the territories of Ukraine, especially in the east, there is no movement towards a cessation of hostilities.

“The war continues, there is significant destruction of infrastructure and human lives, people are killed and injured,” the UN representative emphasized.

According to him, the onset of winter and the risks of power outages are of particular concern..

“People could remain trapped in high-rise buildings, and if the destruction of infrastructure occurs faster than its restoration, this could lead to catastrophic consequences in the midst of a harsh winter,” Schmale explained.

He recalled the example of Sumy, where a few weeks ago 40 thousand residents were left without communications, and only thanks to the efforts of humanitarian services was it possible to avoid evacuation.

At the same time, Shmale noted the resilience of Ukrainians.

“In Kherson, I visited an underground maternity hospital - on the surface there is war, but underground they help women who give birth to children. This demonstrates the resistance of Ukrainians,” he said..

Shmale also gave similar examples - underground schools in Kharkov based on the metro, where children continue their education.

The humanitarian coordinator also emphasized the combination of relief and reconstruction. Some organizations are clearing mines from agricultural fields, and UN food agencies are helping farmers get back to work.. This, in his opinion, supports hope for a better outlook.

Earlier, the media wrote that Russia opposes the agreement to resolve the war in Ukraine if it “does not meet its requirements”. In particular, Moscow is against compromises on Donbass, restrictions on the Ukrainian army and recognition of occupied territories.
