To become part of the general electricity market of the European Union, Ukraine needs not only to be technically integrated, but also fundamentally change the rules of the game in the market. One of the key conditions is the abolition of maximum prices (price-cups), which still distort competition and contradict European legislation.

This was stated by Suzanne Nis, head of Green Deal Ukraine and the leading energy expert of the EU.

She emphasized: “Ukraine wants to join the European electricity market in 2027. This is a very ambitious goal. This can happen quickly, but requires complete the implementation of the network codes, as well as a package of laws on the integration of electric power industry, which has not yet been adopted "

According to her, the specified package should be adopted no later than the third quarter of 2025, and better - earlier. We are talking about key regulatory standards, without which the functioning of the market according to European standards is impossible. One of the painful issues is the presence of price cages.

" They must be canceled, and vulnerable consumers should receive financial support directly, and not through the price of electricity, ”the expert said.

Although last year the upper limits were partially revised, this is not enough for the full functioning of the market, she added.

" But there may be more such improvements, ”Nis emphasized.

Earlier, Vladimir Omelchenko, Director of the Energy Programs of the Razumkov Center, said that the current pricing model, in particular the availability of price kaps, restrains the development of commercial imports from the EU.
